Portuguese movment take action on Portugal Telecom Call cente in Lisbon Portugal

 

Union-led marches are taking place in Portugal this afternoon, as part of today's general strike.

 

Word from Lisbon is that transport services have been badly hit by the general strike

 

The Lisbon subway, which carries more than a half-million passengers every weekday, stayed closed. Train, bus and ferry companies in the capital and the second-largest city Porto provided only occasional services. Long traffic queues built up on roads into both cities as commuters resorted to their cars.

 

There are also reports that most school children were sent home, because teachers and auxiliary staff did not show up for work, and that some medical appointments have been cancelled.

GCPW, which called the strike (more details at 8.16am). has more than 600,000 members, mainly public sector and manual workers.

But Luis Antonio, a plumber, said he was taking part (with his manager's blessing), and blamed Portugal's political class for the country's position

8.34am: There are reports from Portugal that the metro systems in Lisbon and Oporto, Portugal's second-largest city, have shut down because of the strike, and that the ferry service linking the two sides of the Tagus river in Lisbon is also suspended.

8.16am: Today's general strike has been called by Portugal's largest union, the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP). It is opposed to labour law reforms, which remove restrictions on hiring and firing staff, and lowers the compensation payments due to workers.

CGTP, which has strong communist links, hopes that all major public transport services would join the stoppage, including trains, the Lisbon underground and the ferry boats that take workers across the Tagus River to the capital. That would mean that people could be unable to reach their workplace, even if they don't support the action.

3.51pm: The head of the Portuguese union that called today's general strike has vowed to press on with more industrial action in future, and admitted that today's turnout wasn't great.

Armenio Carlos, leader of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers, said it was hard to persuade workers to down tools when they are already struggling to earn enough to survive.

He warned, though, that if Portugal risks disaster if it continues to impose tough austerity, saying:

This is the same path that was taken by Greece, which resulted in a huge failure.

American Citizens Protestors descend on Boston Bank of America, ramp up to fall excitement

Dozens of protesters descended on Boston Bank of America branches today, following the company’s announcement that it will slash more than 30,000 jobs in the coming months. This was the first, exciting, taste of dozens of actions, events, trainings and more happening this Fall targeting the big banks for draining wealth from our communities and crashing the economy.

With shouts of “Bank of America: Bad for America” and “We can see your greedy side!,” local residents stormed bank branches in Fields Corner and Grove Hall, presenting three core demands of the financial giant:

Pledge to renegotiate underwater mortgages and stop foreclosures
Resume lending to small businesses
Stop layoffs
Despite its claims of financial hardship in the media, Bank of America posted a $10.2 billion profit in 2010 – and raked in an additional $1 billion federal tax refund. The company pointed to fallout from the housing bust as the rationale for its latest round of mass layoffs. Bank of America holds the largest number of foreclosed properties in the country, but refuses to renegotiate with many former homeowners.

Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants.

The original call for this occupation was published by Adbusters in July; since then, many individuals across the country have stepped up to organize this event, such as the people of the NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. There'll also be similar occupations in the near future such as October2011 in Freedom Plaza, Washington D.C.

The Civic Movement Iceland expresses a deep concern about the way European political leaders manipulate the state of Greek economy and the reason for its collapse.
It is our firm belief that the Greek public is not to blame for the economic meltdown in the world, and even though, Greek banks are now on the brink of collapse, they should not be saved at any cost. Other and more important issues have to be addressed first.

The majority of the so-called Greek debts are private debts, debts of private banks operating in Greece. These privately owned banks owe other privately owned banks, mainly in Germany, France and the UK. Therefore the Greek public should not be forced to underwrite these debts.
The world economy has been proven un-economic and furthermore, it has been proven disastrous for the common public.

This system of imbalance with its disastrous effects, has to come to a halt.
A society will easily function with out this system but this system will never function with out a proper and sound society. And since the society is now being torn apart for the purpose of rebuilding an unsustainable financial system, it is inevitable that both will collapse.

The Civic Movement Iceland calls for action among the leaders of the world. Viable solutions have to emerge. A sustainable and just society must prevail.
That is our debt, and that particular debt is the only debt we are willing to pay.
We owe it to our children to come.

The Civic Movement is a political party in Iceland, founded by a number of grassroots movements in the lead up to the 2009 election during the Global Recession, which hit Iceland particularly hard.
In the election, the Civic Movement won 4 out of 63 seats in Althingi, the Icelandic Parliament.

The Civic Movement is no longer represented in the Althingi and is now collaborating with the Icelandic Association of Debtors and the Open Civic Forum all of whom have been working towards a reformed system and a better society, with great results.
