OWS: Kitchenware Revolution! One Man Protest! How Iceland Economy Recovered! Lessons For The World!
| Hördur Torfason at the second weekly protest, on the 18 October 2008 |
Iceland's Economic Recovery A Lesson for the World on how to handle financial difficulties.
2009 Icelandic financial crisis protests
The 2009 Icelandic financial crisis protests, also referred to as the Kitchenware Revolution occurred in the wake of the Icelandic financial crisis. There had been sporadic protests since October 2008 against the Icelandic government's handling of the financial crisis. The protests intensified on 20 January 2009 with thousands of people showing up to protest at the parliament (Althing) in Reykjavik.
Iceland's parliament is not elected according to the "one person, one vote" principal, with conservative rural areas receiving considerably more representation per person than the main cities.
Protesters were calling for the resignation of government officials, and for new elections to be held. The protests stopped for the most part with the resignation of the old right-wing government. A new left-wing government has been formed after elections in late April.
How All Began
Hördur Torfason Staged a One Man Protest
Concerned with the state of the Icelandic economy, Hördur Torfason staged a one man protest in October 2008. Torfason stood "out on Austurvöllur with an open microphone and invited people to speak". The following Saturday a more organised demonstration occurred, and participants established the Raddir fólksins. The group decided to stage a rally every Saturday until the government stepped down. Torfason led the protest from a stage near the front.

| Iceland Protests 20 January 2009 |
On 21 January 2009, the protests continued in Reykjavík, where the Prime Minister's car was pelted with snowballs, eggs, and cans by demonstrators demanding his resignation. Government buildings were surrounded by a crowd of at least 3,000 people, pelting them with paint and eggs, and the crowd then moved towards the Althing where one demonstrator climbed the walls and put up a sign that read "Treason due to recklessness is still treason." No arrests were reported.
On 22 January 2009, police used tear gas to disperse people on Austurvöllur (the square in front of the Althing), the first such use since the 1949 anti-NATO protest. Around 2,000 protesters had surrounded the building since the day before and they hurled fireworks, shoes, toilet paper, rocks, and paving stones at the building and its police guard. Reykjavik police chief Stefán Eiríksson said that they tried to disperse a "hard core" of a "few hundred" with pepper spray before using the tear gas. Eiríksson also commented that the protests were expected to continue, and that this represented a new situation for Iceland.
Despite the announcement on 23 January 2009 of early Parliamentary elections (to be held on 25 April 2009) and the announcement of Prime Minister Geir Haarde that he was withdrawing from politics due to esophageal cancer and would not be a candidate in those elections, protesters continued to fill the streets, calling for a new political scene and for immediate elections; Haarde announced on 26 January 2009 that he would hand in his resignation as PM shortly, after talks with the Social Democratic Alliance on keeping the government intact had failed earlier the same day.
Iceland's Economic Recovery A Lesson For Ireland from the Economist in 2010
The article in The Economist argues that Ireland could learn something from Iceland on how to handle financial difficulties.
The Economist points out, for one, that on the Misery Index (unemployment plus inflation), Iceland's level of "misery" has been steadily declining, and this year went below Ireland's, which is on its way up.
"Evidence of economic recovery in Iceland means the Irish can no longer persuade themselves that things are worse elsewhere," the article says in part. "Figures released on December 7th showed that Iceland’s GDP rose by 1.2% in the third quarter (Ireland’s third-quarter GDP rose by 0.5%, according to figures published on December 16th). The Icelandic central bank’s benchmark interest rate has fallen to 4.5%, from a peak of 18%. The halving of the dollar value of the Icelandic krona at the height of the crisis pushed inflation as high as 18.6%. It has since fallen close to the central bank’s 2.5% target. The 'misery index', a crude grading that sums unemployment and inflation rates, suggests Iceland is now doing better than Ireland (see chart)."
The reason for this, the Economist argues: letting the banks fail, and not being a part of a larger currency.
On the first point, the article says that by not pouring public money into trying to rescue its banks, Iceland saved itself revenue that would have been tied up in them. Ireland has attempted to save its banks, but has yet to see any benefit from doing so.
At the same time, the euro is no longer seen as the magic solution to economic troubles, the articles states. "When panicky investors were rushing out of small currencies in the autumn of 2008, the euro seemed a haven. There was much talk in Iceland of fast-tracked membership of the European Union and, ultimately, the euro. Two years on, the euro looks more like a trap for countries struggling to regain export competitiveness. Greece and Ireland have lost the confidence of markets, even though both issue bonds in euros. Iceland’s voters are cooler about joining the EU and the euro."
Not that either strategy is without its faults, of course. Iceland did not attempt to save its banks because it could not: the banks were several times greater than the GDP at the time of the crash. Furthermore, the article speculates that Icelanders might be more open to the euro if the economy of the EU were in better shape.
"Even so, that Iceland’s economy has done little worse than Ireland’s is still a triumph," the article concludes. "It has been tough with its creditors and disregarded some international norms—and recovered. Ireland has stood by its banks to the benefit of the wider European banking system. Its reward has been 'rescue' loans at an interest rate that makes it hard to fix its finances. The next Irish government may look at Iceland and decide to play hardball with Europe."

Icelanders Thirst For Vengeance, Says Former Tycoon
Björgólfur Thór Björgólfsson told a Norwegian business newspaper that Icelanders in the wake of the area of "outvasion vikings" have sought vengeance against the rich. He also expressed regrets about buying Landsbanki.
In a nine-page interview in Dagens Næringsliv, RÚV reports, Björgólfur discussed his career and Iceland in general. When the subject of the crash was brought up, he had some strong words to share.
Björgólfur contends that shortly after the financial collapse, the general public wanted to strip the wealthy of all their assets. Rather than creating a "truth commission" modelled after the post-apartheid South Africa model, he says, parliament chose to be controlled by anger and take the matter to court, referring to the trial of former prime minister Geir H. Haarde.
He also said that the Special Investigative Commission report was flawed, contending that he was called a liar in the report but was never interviewed by anyone on the commission over his business practices.
He said that his reputation in the business world has been actively tarnished by the media, comparing his situation to the notorious Hafskip Case from the mid-80s - where a shipping company (owned by his father) on already shaky ground financially was supposedly put out of its misery by negative press coverage.
Björgólfur now sees himself in the same position, and claims that his damaged reputation means that he now owes some 1 trillion ISK.
When asked about some of the biggest regrets in his life, Björgólfur named purchasing Landsbanki. This, he said, he has often regretted, both before and after the financial collapse.

The anti-capitalist protesters #OccupyWallStreet #AntiBanks movement who have set up tent camp in lower Manhattan are becoming a reference of the area, and a reference for America and for the World.
organizing demonstrations in Dallas, TX and in Austin, TX simultaneously, it's so amazing to be a part of something so big
Casey O'Neill had no regrets. He had travelled thousands of miles across the country – and gave up a well-paying job as a data manager in California – to sleep rough in a downtown Manhattan public square, enduring rain and increasingly chilly nights. Police keep a close eye on him every day.
But O'Neill was happy to be part of the "Occupy Wall Street" that have transformed New York's Zuccotti Park from a spot where Wall Streeters grab a lunchtime sandwich into an informal camp of revolutionaries, socialists, anarchists and quite a lot of the just-plain-annoyed.
"Regrets? No. God, no," said O'Neill, 34. "It is a little scary for sure. Somebody had to make a stand to do this. It is kind of amazing right now." O'Neill is even happy to sleep on the park's concrete benches. "It's OK, actually," he said.
O'Neill is part of an encampment in the square that looks ramshackle but in fact is highly organised, and looks rapidly on the way to becoming a fixture of downtown Manhattan life – if the police let the protesters stay there.
That looked unlikely on Tuesday when several protesters were forcibly arrested and taken away, including one woman who ended up in hospital. But for now the protest continues after beginning last weekend with a march on Wall Street.
The protest has morphed into a wide-ranging anti-capitalist demonstration that has attracted attention – and support – from around the world. Bemused bankers, construction workers and other downtown workers pass by every day, stopping to gawp and take pictures. Sometimes there is a lot to look at. Today, for example, Zuni Tikka, 37, was engaged in a topless protest along with several friends.

The protesters' camp in Zucoti Park Lower Manhattan
Standing bare-breasted behind a poster that proclaimed "Capitalism Isn't Working", she happily posed for interested bystanders. The lack of clothing, she explained, was a metaphor. "I can't afford a shirt. Wall Street has stolen the shirts from our backs," she said.
That carnival atmosphere is typical of the protest. Anyone hoping (or fearing) for a violent assault on the bastions of American capitalism will be sorely disappointed. Instead, several hundred protesters each morning and evening set off to march by the New York stock exchange.
They blow trumpets, bang drums and chant slogans while holding placards that read "Free Market My Ass" and "Too Big Has Failed". They go back and forth down Wall Street, behind barricades lined with police, and then return to the camp in Zuccotti Park.

They then spend the day holding workshops, informal concerts and various protest stunts (such as the nude demonstration). They welcome visitors and tourists and try to obey the demands made by the police.
Each day a "general assembly" is held where topics and events are discussed in a free-for-all of debate and discussion. "It is a leaderless situation," said Thorin Caristo, 37, who nonetheless is part of a small core group of people who try to keep things organised.

Why OCCUPY Wall Street activist protesetr Thorin Caristo Explains
One of the protesters, Thorin Caristo, explains why he is there
The protest has attracted wide support and has a sophisticated social media operation. There is a live steaming video TV feed onto the internet and a huge presence on Twitter. Supporters around the world have even been sending in orders to a local pizza shop to keep the protesters fed. So much so, in fact, that some organisers have asked them to stop ordering pizza as they had more than they could eat. Now most help comes in the form of money or – most importantly – more people coming.
"People are donating from all over the world. There are car pools of people arriving from Wisconsin, California and Florida. They told us: 'Hang on, we're coming!' One woman who has travelled a long way is Becky Wartell, 24, a massage therapist from Maine. "I am a small business owner!" she laughed. She had just returned from the latest march down Wall Street.
Wall Street activist protester Becky Wartell point of view
Anti-capitalist protester Becky Wartell explains why she has joined the protests at Wall Street
"What everybody's here protesting is that fact that 1% of the population controls so much wealth. We are the rest of society. We are the 99%," she said.
There is a broad range of opinion on display. Some are travellers who have made protesting into a lifestyle. Some are students. Others are working people, like O'Neill and Wartell, who have taken time off to join in. No one knows how long they are going to be in Zuccotti Park.
As with much of the protest, things appear likely to just evolve as they go along. The same goes for the protesters' aims too. "We don't have a precise goal. We want to stay a month. That's a loose goal. Or maybe longer. We want to be here until we have entered a worldwide dialogue about transparency and accountability in the financial system," said Caristo.
One thing many of the protesters do know is their facts and figures. For every hippy talking about world peace or traveller wanting to heal the world, another will mention the exact tax rates that rich Americans pay, or that 20% of the US population now control 84% of the wealth. Or that the richest 400 families have the same net worth as the bottom 50% of the entire nation.
Even Tikka, as she posed topless before a gaggle of fascinated construction workers, was protesting deliberately next to a sign that read: "I didn't say look, I said listen."

Statement from the Occupiers of Wall Street
Third Communiqué: A Message From Occupied Wall Street
Published 2011-09-20 12:50:30 UTC by OccupyWallSt
We're still here. We intend to stay until we see movements toward real change in our country and the world. This is the third communiqué from the 99 percent.
Today, we occupied Wall Street from the heart of the Financial District. Starting at 8:00 AM, we began a march through the Wall Street area, rolling through the blocks around the New York Stock Exchange. At 9:30 AM, we rang our own "morning bell" to start a "people's exchange," which we brought back to Liberty Plaza. Two more marches occurred during the day around the Wall Street district, each drawing more supporters to us.
Hundreds of us have been occupying One Liberty Plaza, a park in the heart of the Wall Street district, since Saturday afternoon. We have marched on the Financial District, held a candlelight vigil to honor the fallen victims of Wall Street, and filled the plaza with song, dance, and spontaneous acts of liberation.
Food has been donated to the plaza from supporters all over the world. Online donations for pizza, falafels, and other food are coming in from supporters in Omaha, Madrid, Montreal, and other cities, and have exceeded $8,660. (Link to donate: www.wepay.com/donate/99275)
On Saturday we held a general assembly, two thousand strong, based on a consensus-driven decision-making process. Decisions were made for the group to occupy Liberty Plaza in the Wall Street corridor, bedding down in sleeping bags and donated blankets. By 8:00 PM on Monday we still held the plaza, despite constant police presence.
We speak as one. All of our decisions, from our choices to march on Wall Street to our decision to camp at Liberty Plaza were decided through a consensus process by the group, for the group. We are building the world that we want to see, based on human need and sustainability, not corporate greed.
Planned and spontaneous actions will continue throughout the coming days. Expect us.

WorldRevolution America USDOR: American People Protest Around Wall Street
Wall Street Occupation..several thousand protesters are still trying to occupy wall street,
do not believe press reports about there being only one thousand.
Originally organized by Anonymous but including others such as Adbusters.
Almost a complete news blackout, see tweets, it was tweet trending but then twitter removed it, also see live webcams, if the whole wide world is watching it will make it harder for their police to crack skulls.
A lot of Americans are waking up to find out how free they really are in the land of the free.
Police are now treating this peaceful protest as a potential riot, police radio traffic are call ing it a 10-34. Police have been issued with plastic ties/handcuffs and have prison buses lying in wait. Please everybody we have to help this go viral.
As for the mighty debt we are the victims are a pyramid scam run by the American banks, we as Europe should club together and send a clear message to America, can't pay won't pay.
People are trying to tell us if the U.S.A fails it takes us down with it, sorry just like the fear mongering about the yk2 bug, it would not happen.

enemy is the man i don't see: the people in parliment, the corporate monopoly owners, fake liberal politicians those are my enemies. the generals of the armies that are mostly conservatives those are the real motherfuckers that i need to bring it to, not the poor, broke country-ass policemen that's too stupid to know shit about the way things are set up.

Do-It-Yourself Action Toolkit
The time has come for the international community to join its voice with millions of Brazilians who say no to their government's assault on the Amazon and its peoples! Together we can make a difference.
This toolkit is meant to provide you with a variety of sample materials to help guide the protest you are planning in your town or city. Start by finding your nearest Brazilian Embassy or Consulate where you can organize an action during business hours on Monday, August 22, 2011. It can be anything from a small gathering of a few individuals handing out leaflets and holding up signs to a high-profile public action, including theatrical or musical presentations. The more creative and visual, the better!
The next step is to consult this page for tips on how to best plan your action in coordination with the others like it around the world. Consistency is important as it shows we are all speaking in one voice.
In the coming days you will find a series of downloadable attachments to help give you ideas.
Check back frequently for more materials and information. These will include:
■Visuals from protests in Brazil and around the world to inspire your banners and signs
■A list of slogans for signs and talking points for your allies and for the press
■A sample press advisory to alert your local media of your action
■Sample informational leaflets for the public
■A template of a letter or card to hand into the Brazilian Ambassador or other Brazilian government representatives in your country
For now, please download this briefing document on Belo Monte to become better acquainted with critical importance of this struggle and why your voice is needed to halt this disaster in the making.
See This Solidarity Action Against the Belo Monte Dam in Washington, DC
Amazon Watch organized a protest in solidarity with groups on the ground in Brazil opposing the Belo Monte Dam Complex. The Brazilian government is moving forward with plans to construct the 3rd largest dam in the world, the Belo Monte Dam, on the Xingu River in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. Not only would the Belo Monte Dam violate indigenous rights, cause serious social and environmental damage, and wreak havoc on biodiversity and conservation efforts in the region, but also, according to experts, this monstrous dam would not provide efficient energy to the people of Brazil. In order to guarantee a year-round flow of water, the government would need to construct a series of large dams on the Xingu and its tributaries which will gravely impact the forests and forest peoples. Far from being green and renewable, this project will generate vast amounts of greenhouse gases while sending much of its power to hazardous industrial mining operations the Amazon forest.

We have all been divided for to long and we need to unite for the better of our own lives, the lives of our families, friends and communities.
Protests in Ireland are taking place all the time but being divided stops us from ever fixing the problems we are having.
On October 15th 2011 we ask you to stand together for one single day so we can all together try and sort the issues. We are being made to pay for the banks / corporations and Government.

Portugal: Portuguese Austerity Tax on Bonuses Sparks Protest
Portuguese austerity tax on bonuses sparks protest
“We want higher pay”: that was the message from thousands who marched in Lisbon on Thursday, heeding union calls to protest against recent austerity measures in Portugal.
They include an extraordinary tax on end-of-year bonuses, announced by the prime minister Passos Cuelho.
The move goes beyond Portugal’s bailout terms – because, he says, new figures on the economy show it is necessary. The demonstrators beg to differ.
“I’m here because I think the measures being brought in are very unfair. I am here because it’s through this workers’ struggle that we can fight against the rising cost of living,” said one young woman.
A man said:
“I’m a worker, living conditions today are bad and are likely to get worse so I’m here to fight for my interests, for the workers’ interests.”
The government has just published a more pessimistic estimate for GDP than was previously predicted.
Under Portugal’s loan plan, the country needs to cut its budget deficit by more than a third this year.
