Crowds gathered in New York's financial district to protest Wall Street greed, corruption and lack of accountability. RT's Anastasia Churkina dove into the rally to find out whether this could be the beginning of America's own Arab Spring.

(CBS News) NEW YORK - At least five people were arrested on the third day of protests in New York's Financial District, spearheaded by a coalition of groups rallying against the influence of corporate money in politics.
Beginning on Saturday - on what was called a U.S. Day of Rage - several groups of activists vowed to occupy Wall Street, to express their anger over a financial system they say favors the rich and powerful, and about a democratic process they deem to be corrupt.

Organizers of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstration have called for 20,000 people to "flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months."

Channeling the occupation of Cairo's Tahrir Square by Egyptians protesting the rule of Hosni Mubarak, protesters have camped out in lower Manhattan over the weekend, seeking to occupy the center of the financial world. They hope to attract many more.

Protest organizers seek to persuade President Barack Obama to establish a commission that would end "the influence money has over representatives in Washington." Their website is occupywallst.org.

The demonstration's staging area in nearby Zuccotti Park (re-named Liberty Plaza) houses tents and cardboard used by those camping out.

on Monday people marched behind police barricades up and down both sides of Wall Street - clogging the sidewalks as financial firm employees tried to get to work.

One of the demonstrators, Robert Siegel, said that eight years working as a consultant for an investment bank was enough to turn him into a protester.

"I just shuffled other people's money around and took a cut. Nothing was being contributed. A lot was just being taken out," he told Silverman. "[I] watched the silliness compound on itself. At some point, I wanted a lifestyle that didn't consist of going up to computers to deal with angry people."

Here’s something a bit odd. Earlier today we got an email from someone (not sure if he wants his identity revealed here) who claimed that Yahoo Mail blocked him from sending any emails with ‘Occupy Wall Street’ or the occupywallst.org URL in the body of the message. I thought I’d try it out and, guess what, I got the following message:

Suspicious activity has been detected on your account. To protect your account and our users, your message has not been sent.

I tested this and played around with it. Every time I put ‘Occupy Wall Street’ or the occupywallst.org URL in the body of a message, I got the same ‘suspicious activity’ warning. I tried using other URL’s to see if it was some kind of anti-spam thing, but they all got through. The only thing that seemed to block emails from getting sent was using this particular combination. Try it yourself and see.

I tried the same thing with Gmail, Hotmail, mail.com and Facebook’s message system. In all those cases, the emails went through just fine. And my Yahoo account is hardly some new, potential spam account. I have had it for longer than I care to remember, and have been happily sending and receiving emails for a very long time with no problems at all.

I sent a query to Yahoo and have heard nothing back so far. I’ll post an update here when / if I do. But it does seem odd that putting ‘Occupy Wall Street’ and occupywallst.org into the body of a message, Yahoo Mail declined to send the ‘suspicious’ message. I’d really like to know why this happened, but I am starting to wonder if I really want to be using Yahoo Mail anymore…

Americans to Wall Street: “Pay US Back”
Thousands of Homeowners, Clergy, Congregants & Unions in 10 Cities Demand That Banks Pay Their Fair Share of Taxes, End the Mortgage Crisis and Create Jobs

(Washington, D.C.) Starting on September 20 in Washington State, everyday people fighting to create good jobs, reverse the foreclosure crisis, and build an economy that works for everyone will engage in a series of direct actions in 10 cities targeting big banks that bankrupted the country and drained wealth from American families. The direct actions primarily target JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo and include taking over bank buildings, meetings of corporate officials, civil disobedience, prayer vigils, mass mobilizations, and more.

The first of 10 direct actions will take place on September 20-21 at Suncadia, a mountain resort near Cle Elum, WA, where The Association of Washington Business (the statewide chamber of commerce) will be holding their annual policy summit. Two hundred low- and middle-income people allied with Washington Community Action Network will demand that banks, corporations and wealthy individuals pay their fair share of taxes. On September 21 from 12-1 p.m., protesters calling for an end to corporate tax loopholes will gather at JPMorgan Chase Bank in Seattle after Phyllis Campbell, Northwest Director of Chase Bank, speaks at Suncadia.

The weeks of rolling actions (schedule below) will also publicly launch The New Bottom Line, a new nationwide coalition representing more than 1,000 faith-based and community organizations that seek to hold Wall Street accountable and find solutions for struggling and middle-class families.

“We are struggling with less and less, while the big banks profit more and more. The big banks have done nothing but dodge taxes, throw people out of their homes and choke small business, all the while draining our wealth to pad their bottom line. It’s time for JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo to pay US back,” said George Goehl, Executive Director of National People’s Action, an organizational member of The New Bottom Line. “We are fighting to build an economy that works for all of us. Our bottom line means good jobs, healthy communities, and a government that fights for everyday people.”

“The nation’s banks are sitting on a historically high level of cash reserves of $1.64 trillion, but they refuse to help the country. It’s downright unpatriotic. It’s time for a new bottom line: banks must pay their fair share of taxes, end the mortgage crisis by agreeing to principal write downs for all underwater homeowners, and help create jobs through small business loans,” said LeeAnn Hall, Executive Director of Alliance for a Just Society, an organizational member of The New Bottom Line.

Each city (schedule below) has a local demand or proposal for making that community whole after years of mortgage fraud, predatory lending, and other wealth-stripping practices.

Nationwide, thousands of people are demanding that the banks “Pay US Back” and they must:

• Pay their fair share of taxes: Stop draining government of revenue and pay their statutorily required 35% corporate income tax. Stop gaming the system through off-shore tax shelters and loopholes.

• Stabilize the housing market and revitalize the economy: Reduce principal for all underwater homeowners to current-market value. This would end the foreclosure crisis, reset the housing market, pump billions of dollars back into the economy and create one million jobs a year.

• Invest in American jobs: Stop sitting on trillions in cash reserves that could be invested in small businesses, the main source of jobs in the U.S., and other job-generating investments.

Following the fall actions, grassroots organizations across the country will be putting Wall Street accountability on the 2012 campaign agenda, including ballot initiatives, local, state, and federal legislation and divestment campaigns forcing city and state governments to divest from the big banks that are destroying their communities. New Bottom Line members will advance policies that make candidates choose, “Which side are you on: Wall Street or the people?”

“Wall Street’s big dollars are getting our elected officials to rig the system for Wall Street. So it’s no surprise that politicians talk about cutting our kids’ education and our parents’ health care as though there’s no money. It’s a big lie. We know where the money is to keep our communities strong and healthy. It’s not in Grandma’s pension. It’s not in the homes of families fighting foreclosure. And it’s not in the pockets of American schoolchildren or schoolteachers. It’s not in cuts to what we care about most. Protesters gather in New York's financial hub for demonstration against what organisers call corporate dominance.

Building on the momentum of the Arab Spring movements, protesters in the US are gathering in New York City's financial district in a bid to show mass resistance against the dominance of the country's financial system.

What started as an online campaign has translated into action on the ground, with protest organisers calling for thousands of people to "occupy Wall Street" on Saturday.

"On the 17th of September, we want to see 20,000 people flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months," organisers wrote on the www.occupywallst.org website.

"Like our brothers and sisters in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. We also encourage the use of nonviolence to achieve our ends and maximize the safety of all participants."

The leaderless movement includes hacktivist group Anonymous among the protesters. The group released a video online calling on people to take to the streets on September 17.

Similar to the structure of the hacktivist group itself there is no defined central authority, but Twitter accounts like @AnonOps are hubs of information for those attending the protests in person and virtually.

As was the case with Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey the Anonymous Hacktivists Hacker Group has posted a video accusing Wall Street and governments of exploiting the public and warning authorities that the hacktivist group is coming
