On the Feasibility of Side-Channel Attacks with Brain-Computer Interfaces

Brain computer interfaces (BCI) are becoming increasingly popular in the gaming and entertainment industries. Consumer-grade BCI devices are available for a few hundred dollars and are used in a variety of applications, such as video games, hands-free keyboards, or as an assistant in relaxation training. There are application stores similar to the ones used for smart phones, where application developers have access to an API to collect data from the BCI devices.

The security risks involved in using consumer-grade BCI devices have never been studied and the impact of malicious software with access to the device is unexplored. We take a first step in studying the security implications of such devices and demonstrate that this upcoming technology could be turned against users to reveal their private and secret information. We use inexpensive electroencephalography (EEG) based BCI devices to test the feasibility of simple, yet effective, attacks. The captured EEG signal could reveal the user.s private informa- tion about, e.g., bank cards, PIN numbers, area of living, the knowledge of the known persons. This is the first attempt to study the security implications of consumer-grade BCI devices. We show that the entropy of the private information is decreased on the average by approximately 15 % - 40 % compared to random guessing attacks.

AS PROTESTS against financial power sweep around the world this week, science confirmed the protesters reasons (our) about the financial system. An analysis of the relationships between 43,000 transnational corporations has identified a relatively small group of companies, mainly banks, with disproportionate power over the global economy.

The study's assumptions have attracted some criticism, but complex systems analysts contacted by New Scientist say it is a unique effort to untangle control in the global economy. Pushing the analysis further, they say, could help to identify ways of making global capitalism more stable.

The study, by a trio of complex systems theorists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, is the first to go beyond ideology to empirically identify such a network of power. It combines the mathematics long used to model natural systems with comprehensive corporate data to map ownership among the world's transnational corporations (TNCs).

Previous studies have found that a few TNCs own large chunks of the world's economy, but they included only a limited number of companies and omitted indirect ownerships, but we could see how this affected the global economy - whether it made it more or less stable, for instance.

The Zurich team can. From Orbis 2007, a database listing 37 million companies and investors worldwide, they pulled out all 43,060 TNCs and the share ownerships linking them. Then they constructed a model of which companies controlled others through shareholding networks, coupled with each company's operating revenues, to map the structure of economic power.

The work, to be published in PLoS One, revealed a core of 1318 companies with interlocking ownerships (see image). Each of the 1318 had ties to two or more other companies, and on average they were connected to 20. What's more, although they represented 20 per cent of global operating revenues, the 1318 appeared to collectively own through their shares the majority of the world's large blue chip and manufacturing firms - the "real" economy - representing a further 60 per cent of global revenues.

When the team further untangled the web of ownership, it found much of it tracked back to a "super-entity" of 147 even more tightly knit companies - all of their ownership was held by other members of the super-entity - that controlled 40 per cent of the total wealth in the network. "In effect, less than 1 per cent of the companies were able to control 40 per cent of the entire network," says Glattfelder. Most were financial institutions. The top 20 included Barclays Bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co, and The Goldman Sachs Group.

John Driffill of the University of London, a macroeconomics expert, says the value of the analysis is not just to see if a small number of people controls the global economy, but rather its insights into economic stability.

Concentration of power is not good or bad in itself, says the Zurich team, but the core's tight interconnections could be. As the world learned in 2008, such networks are unstable. "If one [company] suffers distress," says Glattfelder, "this propagates."

"It's disconcerting to see how connected things really are," agrees George Sugihara of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, a complex systems expert who has advised Deutsche Bank.

Yaneer Bar-Yam, head of the New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI), warns that the analysis assumes ownership equates to control, which is not always true. Most company shares are held by fund managers who may or may not control what the companies they part-own actually do. The impact of this on the system's behaviour, he says, requires more analysis.

Crucially, by identifying the architecture of global economic power, the analysis could help make it more stable. By finding the vulnerable aspects of the system, economists can suggest measures to prevent future collapses spreading through the entire economy. Glattfelder says we may need global anti-trust rules, which now exist only at national level, to limit over-connection among TNCs. Sugihara says the analysis suggests one possible solution: firms should be taxed for excess interconnectivity to discourage this risk.

One thing won't chime with some of the protesters' claims: the super-entity is the intentional result of a conspiracy to rule the world. "Such structures are common in nature," says Sugihara.

Newcomers to any network connect preferentially to highly connected members. TNCs buy shares in each other for business reasons, not for world domination. If connectedness clusters, so does wealth, says Dan Braha of NECSI: in similar models, money flows towards the most highly connected members. The Zurich study, says Sugihara, "is strong evidence that simple rules governing TNCs give rise spontaneously to highly connected groups". Or as Braha puts it: "The Occupy Wall Street claim that 1 per cent of people have most of the wealth reflects a logical phase of the self-organising economy."

So, the super-entity result from conspiracy. The real question, says the Zurich team, is whether it can exert concerted political power. Driffill feels 147 is too many to sustain collusion. Braha suspects they will compete in the market but act together on common interests. Resisting changes to the network structure may be one such common interest.

Astronomical alignments as the cause of ~M6+ seismicity

I here demonstrate empirically my georesonator concept in which tidally induced magnification of Earth masses' resonance causes seismicity. To that end, I show that all strong (~M6+) earthquakes of 2010 occurred during the Earth's long (t > 3 day) astronomical alignments within our solar system. I then show that the same holds true for all very strong (~M8+) earthquakes of the decade of 2000's. Finally, the strongest (M8.6+) earthquakes of the past century are shown to have occurred during the Earth's multiple long alignments, whereas half of the high-strongest (M9+) ones occurred during Full Moon. I used the comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin), as it has been adding to robustness in terms of very strong seismicity since 2007 (in terms of strongest seismicity: since 1965). The Elenin will continue intensifying the Earth's very strong seismicity until August-October, 2011. Approximate forecast of earthquakes based on my discoveries is feasible. This demonstration proves my hyperresonator concept, arrived at earlier as a mathematical-physical solution to the most general extension of the georesonator concept possible.

Magnification of mantle resonance as a cause of tectonics

Variance spectral analysis of superconducting gravimeter (SG) decadal data (noise inclusive) is presented suggesting that the Earth tectonogenesis is based on magnification of the mass (mainly the mantle) mechanical resonance, in addition to or instead of previously hypothesized causes. Here the use of raw (gapped and unaltered) data is regarded as the criterion for a physical result validity, so data were not altered in any way. Then analogously to the atmospheric tidal forcing of global high frequency free oscillation, I propose that the Moon synodically recurring pull could likewise drive the long-periodic (12 to 120 minutes) oscillation of the Earth. To demonstrate this, I show that the daily magnitudes of mass (gravity) oscillation, as a relative measure of the non-stationary Earth kinetic energy, get synodically periodic while correlating up to 0.97 with seismic energies on the day of shallow and 3 days before deep earthquakes. The forced oscillator equations for the mantle usual viscosity and the Earth springtide and grave mode periods successfully model an identical 3 days phase. Finally, whereas reports on gravest earthquakes (of around M9.5) put the maximum coseismic displacement at around 10 m, the same equations predict the maximum displacement as 9.8 m, too. Hence, the same mechanism that causes bridges to collapse under the soldiers step marching could be making the lithosphere fail under the springtide induced magnification of mantle resonance resulting in strong earthquakes of unspecified type. If this assertion is correct, then many if not most large earthquakes could be spatially and temporally predictable.

Be Prepared

Do you have an emergency plan in place for a friend or family member with special needs? The first step is to understand the potential threats to your area and the specific needs of the individual. Making the decision to shelter-in-place or evacuate during an emergency will usually depend on personal circumstances. It is important to understand local area plans and what emergency resources are available for people with special needs. Urge the individual to check with their state or local emergency management agency to see if a special needs registry is maintained. If a registry exists, be sure your friends or family members with special needs are added to the list. This will help first responders locate and provide for these individuals during an emergency.If you currently work at NASA and have permanent or temporary special needs, be sure that you identify yourself as someone who may need assistance during an emergency. Contact the office responsible for diversity and equal opportunity at your Center to discuss setting up an individual evacuation plan tailored to your specific needs. Self identification will allow building emergency management to locate you and provide additional assistance during an emergency.

Conduct a Needs Assessment

If you, a friend, a family member, or neighbor has special needs then take the time to complete a needs assessment so the resources needed before,

during, and after an emergency can be identified. When completing a needs assessment, consider current capabilities and additional assistance necessary should an emergency occur. Answers to questions like the ones listed below will help in designing a detailed preparedness plan.

Does the individual need assistance with personal care, such as bathing or getting dressed? Does the individual use specialized equipment, such as a wheelchair, shower chair, oxygen, etc.? What is the individual’s means of transportation? Does the individual use a specially equipped vehicle or other accessible transportation? Does the individual need mobility aids such as ramps? Are evacuation markings clearly labeled in the individual’s home and work place? Does the individual need help leaving your home or office?Can the individual independently locate and shut off utilities?Can the individual independently operate a fire extinguisher?Does the individual require the assistance of a service animal?

Emergency Notification Systems

Find out how state and local authorities will warn individuals with special needs of an emergency and how they will provide information during and after a disaster. With the wide range of technologies available, emergency messages can be delivered through devices like cell phones, pagers, satellite television/radio, landline phones, computers, personal digital assistants, and road signs. These live or prerecorded messages may be sent via audio, video, or text in multiple languages, including American Sign Language and braille. Be sure to check with your state or local emergency management agency to find out what types of emergency notification systems are available in the community. NASA uses a variety of audio, visual, and other technologies to communicate emergencies to Center personnel. Create a Support Network

When planning for someone with special needs, it is important to establish a support network. Reach out to family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers to be part of the support network. Once this group is in place, have a frank discussion about what the specific needs and considerations are for that individual during an emergency. It is important to set the proper expectations from the very beginning to be sure the individuals in your network are willing and able to perform their roles and responsibilities. Identify and arrange for a backup person from their personal support network to check on the individual with special needs in the event of an emergency (in case the primary person you rely on is not available).

Develop a Plan

When developing a preparedness plan for someone with special needs, be sure to include the basics like understanding the types of emergencies most prevalent in the area, having a pet preparedness plan (especially if a service animal is being used), identifying a primary and alternate out-of-area contact and be sure to have two meeting locations in case the individual has to evacuate. However, it is important to understand that people with special needs often require more detailed planning for emergencies. Depending on the specific needs of the individual, consider things like

Having a backup power supply for special medical equipment.Consider getting a medical alert system that will allow you to call for help if you are immobilized in an emergency. Have a manual wheelchair for backup if an electric wheelchair or scooter is used. Store backup equipment (mobility, medical, etc.) at a neighbor’s home, a school, or your workplace. If a personal care attendant is from an agency, check to see if the agency has special provisions for emergencies.If the individual lives in an apartment, be sure they identify themselves to building managers and help devise an effective emergency procedure. •

Emergency Supply Kit

Developing a supply kit for someone with special needs should include the basics like food, water, first aid kit, clothing, bedding, tools, supplies, and special items. However, depending on the needs of the individual, there may be some additional items you will want to include as part of the supply kit. Some items may include, but are not limited to

An extra set of eyeglasses and hearing aids.Battery chargers and extra batteries for hearing aids, motorized wheelchairs, or other battery-operated medical or assistive technology devices. Copies of medical prescriptions, doctors’ orders, and the style and serial numbers of the support devices. Medical alert tags or bracelets or written descriptions of your disability and support needs.Supplies for a service animal. Medical insurance cards, Medicare/Medicaid cards, physician contact information, list of allergies, and medical history. A list of the local nonprofit or community-based organizations that know you or assist people with access and functional needs. A list of personal contacts, family, and friends that may need to be contacted in an emergency. A laminated personal communication board should you need assistance being understood. If possible, extra medicine, oxygen, insulin, catheters, or other medical supplies used regularly. If you use a motorized wheelchair, have a lightweight manual wheelchair available for emergencies. Know the size and weight of your wheelchair, in addition to whether or not it is collapsible, in case it has to be transported.Consider putting important information onto a portable thumb drive for easy transport in the event of evacuation. •

NASA families and communities are subject to a number of potential emergencies such as fires, floods, severe storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, or even terrorist attacks. While we all hope such occurrences never happen, we have learned through past events that preparing ourselves and our communities for an emergency is important. Even though emergency personnel may be on the scene after an emergency, it is important to realize that responders may not be able to reach everyone who needs help immediately.The most important asset to the successful completion of NASA’s mission is its people and their families, which is why we want you to "know your stuff" when it comes to family preparedness. Inside this brochure you will find a step-by-step guide to developing your family preparedness plan. This document will discuss what you need, how long you need it, and other essential information to assist you in developing your family preparedness plan. Even though we have initiated the first step by providing you with information about preparedness plans, it is now up to you to prepare yourself and your family for emergencies.As you develop your family preparedness plan, be sure to involve all the members of your household. After all, a plan will only work when everyone knows about it and agrees to operate within its guidelines.

Four Steps to Emergency Preparedness Planning

Preflight:
Know Your Stuff!

Take the time to learn about your community. Identify the hazards that are prevalent in your area; know whom you need to include in your plan; and understand what tools, plans, and resources your community has in place. Having the right information will help guide you as you develop your preparedness plan.

What types of hazards are most prevalent in your area?

Whether it is a fire, a flood, a hurricane, a tornado, a winter storm, or an earthquake, it is important to understand the potential impacts and warning signs of hazards. Visit your state and local emergency management Web sites for more information about potential hazards in your area.

What emergency warning signals does my community have?

What do they sound like? How are they communicated? Are they communicated in a variety of languages? What should you do when you hear them? Also, learn which radio and television stations provide emergency information for your area. If you have one or more family members with special needs, make sure they have the necessary communication tools to receive the warning message. Your state or local emergency management agency Web site should have more information about the emergency warning signals currently being used in your area.

How does NASA communicate emergencies?

NASA uses a variety of audio, visual, and other technologies to communicate emergencies to Center personnel.

What should I do with my pets?

If you have to evacuate, do not leave your pets at home; you may not know how long you will be gone. Moreover, because of things like contaminated food and water or hazardous environmental conditions, you cannot ensure the safety of pets left at home. If you have to evacuate or shelter in place, be sure you know what items you may need for your pets (food, water, medicine, leash, crate, etc.). What should I do if I have a family member or neighbor with special needs?

The term "special needs" can cover many things when one is discussing emergency preparedness. A few examples of persons with special needs may include someone with a specifically identified disability, an elderly individual requiring special planning considerations, someone with limited English language proficiency, or someone with a temporary condition that requires special planning (e.g., pregnancy or broken or sprained limbs). If you have a friend, family member, or neighbor with special needs, be sure you have a plan in place to assist them if needed. You may need to identify their specific needs and request instructions on how to obtain and use the resources required. Make sure you both understand each other’s expectations if an emergency were to occur and ensure that you have an effective communications plan established ahead of time. Visit

Know Your Mission: Develop Your Plan

Now that you have learned about what can happen and how your community is prepared to respond to emergencies, it is time to develop your family preparedness plan. You can start this process by reviewing the information you collected in the first section. Discuss the types of hazards that are most prevalent in your area and identify what you will do in each case.

Hazards come in all shapes and sizes. Your evacuation procedures for a fire may be different from those for a hurricane or a tornado. Knowing which hazards are prevalent in your area will help determine your plan of action.

Discuss what to do during an evacuation. Plan to take care of your pets.

Evacuations can be very stressful and chaotic. Make sure each family member understands his or her responsibilities. It is important to plan and account for pets and family members with special needs.

Ask a friend or relative to be your "out-of-area contact."

The out-of-area contact is one of the most important concepts in your emergency plan. When an emergency occurs, you will be concerned about the welfare of your loved ones. In an emergency, local telephone service may be disrupted. However, long-distance lines, because they are routed many different ways out of your community, may be open. Your out-of-area contact should serve as a point of contact for anyone trying to reach you during an emergency or a way to ensure that members of your family are safe and accounted for in the event that you all get separated.Pick two places to meet. Everyone must know the addresses and phone numbers of those locations.

Mission Assurance: Get Prepared

Creating a family preparedness plan is a great first step. Help protect yourself and your family by following some of the steps below. These measures may save you critical time during an emergency.

Post emergency telephone numbers by phones.Teach children how and when to call 911 or your local emergency services number for help.Know how and when to turn off the water, gas, and electricity.Be sure you have adequate insurance coverage. Install a fire extinguisher in your home and make sure each member of the household knows how to use it and where it is kept (the most common type of fire extinguisher is ABC).Install smoke detectors on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms (contact your local fire department for more information on smoke detectors and where they should be placed).Conduct a home hazard hunt. Items in your home that can fall, move, break, or cause a fire are considered home hazards.Stock emergency supplies and assemble an emergency supply kit.Take a first-aid and CPR class.Determine the best escape routes from your home. Find two ways out of each room, if possible.

The Launch:
Practice Your Plan

When it comes to the safety of you and your family, you can never be too prepared. Once you have created your family preparedness plan, be sure to practice your plan. Reviewing your plan with relatives and friends and updating it annually are useful steps in ensuring that everyone is aware of what to do in the event of an emergency.

Review your plan every 6 months.Conduct fire and emergency evacuation drills.Test and recharge your fire extinguisher(s) according to manufacturer’s instructions.Test your smoke detectors monthly. Change the batteries every 6 months and clean the dust from the detector each time you change batteries.Replace stored water and food every 6 months.

TIP: When you set your clocks in the fall and the spring, also replace your stored water and food, change your smoke detector batteries, and do other things necessary to maintain your plan.

Important Things To Know About Evacuations

On occasion, emergencies can be so severe that it is unsafe for the public to remain in their communities. In the event an evacuation is ordered, local officials will provide information regarding the evacuation through local media. In some circumstances, other warning methods may include sirens, telephone calls, or street-by-street notification by police or fire officials. If you would like additional information on how evacuation notices are provided, contact your local emergency management agency.The amount of time you have to evacuate will depend on the hazard. event is a weather condition, such as a hurricane that can be monitored, you might have a day or two to get ready. However, many emergencies allow no time for people to gather even the most basic necessities, which is why planning ahead is essential.

Evacuation Guidelines

Always:

Keep a full tank of gas in your car if an evacuation seems likely. Gas stations may be closed during an emergency and are unable to pump gas during power outages. Plan to take one car per family to reduce congestion and delay.Make transportation arrangements with friends or your local government if you do not own a car.Listen to a battery-powered radio and follow local evacuation instructions.Gather your family and go if you are instructed to evacuate immediately.Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather.Follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not take shortcuts; they may be blocked.Be alert for washed-out roads and bridges. Do not drive into flooded areas.Stay away from downed power lines.

If time permits: Gather your emergency supply kit.Wear sturdy shoes and clothing items that provide protection, such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and a cap.Secure your home: close and lock all doors and windows. Unplug electrical equipment, such as radios and televisions and small appliances, like toasters and microwaves. Emergency Supply Kits
Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. An emergency may cause you and your family to shelter in place or evacuate for an unknown period of time. Even though first responders are on scene working hard, it may be hours or even days before they can reach you. That is why it is important to build an emergency supply kit for your home and your car. The items listed below are highly recommended for your emergency supply kit; however, you know your needs best, so add other items as you see fit.
This icon identifies emergency supply kit items for your car. Quantities identified below may differ from those in the regular kit, because an emergency supply kit for your car is to be used in case of a breakdown or prolonged delay. For winter months, be sure you include a shovel, warm clothes, and rock salt.

1 gallon of water per person per day (drinking, food preparation, and sanitation)
Food
Store at least a 3-day supply of nonperishable food for each person. Select foods that require no refrigeration and little preparation and that meet any dietary restrictions you or your family may have. Select food items that are compact and lightweight. Be sure you rotate your food items every 6 months.
